Wilma Sharp

Wilma considers herself a beginner in the photography world. She says she only really got into photography when the Clutha Camera Club reformed about eight years ago, since when she feels she has learnt so much from the other members, and I continue to do so every day. Wilma says she doesn't have a favourite genre, although she does find herself photographing birds quite often. She reckons that’s because they are right there in her backyard and therefore make perfect subjects.

Living in the Catlins, and doing so much of her photography there, has made Wilma realise just how beautiful that part of the country is. She doesn't have to travel far to find something amazing to capture - and it is that beauty that she feels she almost certainly took for granted until a camera entered her world. Now, Wilma always has her camera with her and finds she is constantly on the lookout for the next image. She describes herself as being in awe of the other members of this group and the incredible calibre of photography they present. She does acknowledge, though, that like many of us, she is her own fiercest critic and often lacks confidence in her work, but she does feel as though she is ‘getting there’. Wilma says that photography has given her a brand new appreciation for images. She now sees how vital elements such as composition, leading lines, and sharpness can be to a photo. As for post-processing, she feels that is still a massive learning curve for her but says she’s making progress.
